Stabilisation of a Free Media System – From Thinking to Acting

TOPIC

Stabilisation of a Free Media System – From Thinking to Acting

Protecting Freedom. Under this over-arching maxim, ERGA’s session searches for effective solutions for a sustainable balance between the protection of fundamental values and the requirements of European content providers. National audiovisual regulators within ERGA are sure: Increasing digital distribution of content leads to increasing cross-border violation of rules, which lead to an increased need for regulatory answers. How must cross-border cooperation look like when enforcing common European standards? How should legal and practical procedures be designed to guarantee a solid protection of citizens while preserving the core ideas of the country of origin principle? To what extend is there a need for an adjustment of the mechanisms of the country of origin principle?

In the first part of this focus session speakers are invited to describe their interests, followed by a joint search for synchronised solutions in the second part. Doing so, the session builds on the results of the previous focus sessions led by the Hans-Bredow-Institut and the German Länder.
